Heavy Seas Beer

Sips of the Week

This week Laurie’s tasting some hometown brews with Hugh Sisson of Heavy Seas Beer. We’ll find out about some of the new things happening at Heavy Seas and how you can meet Hugh in person at the Harford Community College’s Wine Expo on Sunday! Beers Tasted: Heavy Seas Cross Bones IPA, 4.5% ABV Brewery Notes: CrossBones is our first new year-round beer since 2003! We worked long and hard to create the perfect session IPA that would satisfy the hoppiest of hop heads, all while not putting them under the table. This session IPA is bursting with floral and citrus notes and has a strong malt backbone to support all of that hoppy goodness. Upon tasting CrossBones, with it’s big body, smooth finish and lingering citrus flavor, it’s hard to imagine that it’s only 4.5%. How do we get all of the aroma and flavor from a beer like Loose Cannon into CrossBones? Avast! You’ll never find me buried treasure! Heavy Seas Deep 6 Porter, 6.8% ABV Brewery Notes: Rich, malty, and complex with a surprisingly dry finish, this robust English-style porter is never cloying and wonderfully drinkable. A dense tan head portends the chocolate, roasty, brownie batter flavor. Marris otter barley imported from the UK imparts a deep nuttiness accentuated by the unique english yeast strain. The cheeky yeast generates subtle pear, apple and strawberry esters that gently contribute to the depth of flavor. The complex balance comes from imported UK target and fuggle hops, contributing earthy, herbaceous, tea-like notes. The result is a hefty brew that walks the fine line between eminent drinkability and overwhelming flavor impact Uncharted Waters Heavy Seas Siren Noire Chocolate Stout, 9.5%ABV Brewery Notes: Our Siren Noire isn’t your father’s chocolate stout. We’ve used almost 3 pounds of Belgian coco nibs per barrel. We’ve aged it for five weeks in bourbon barrels with vanilla beans added. A mix of dark malts gives Siren Noire a well-rounded body that is decidedly chocolatey—but without being extraordinarily sweet. Brewers Gold hops contribute an earthy spiciness, with notes of black current. Listen Here:
